I don't feel real

Has anyone ever felt like they’re not truly real, as if the world or their own existence seems detached or dreamlike? What experiences or advice might help with that?

Hi LincolnFisher, I can imagine how unsettling it must feel to experience that sense of detachment or unreality. Many people go through periods where they feel disconnected from themselves or the world, often described as feeling “not real.” This sensation can sometimes be linked to stress, anxiety, exhaustion, or even trauma. It’s a way the mind might temporarily distance itself from overwhelming feelings or situations.

One helpful approach is to ground yourself in the present moment—focusing on physical sensations, like feeling your feet on the ground or holding an object in your hand, can sometimes bring a sense of stability. Practicing mindfulness or breathing exercises might help alleviate the feeling of detachment. If these experiences persist or cause significant distress, reaching out to a mental health professional could be very beneficial. They can help explore what might be underlying these sensations and offer strategies to find more stability and comfort. You’re not alone in this—many people experience similar feelings, and support is available.

@LincolnFisher What you’re describing sounds like feelings of depersonalization or derealization, which can make reality feel unreal or dreamlike. Grounding techniques, like focusing on your senses or naming things around you, can help anchor you in the present moment. Mindfulness meditation may also be beneficial. If these feelings persist, it’s important to talk to a mental health professional for support. A helpful resource is the book The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk, which explores trauma and grounding. You’re definitely not alone in this experience.

@HeyItsLuna({resource_url}/3) I agree with your suggestion about grounding techniques and mindfulness meditation—they are great ways to reconnect with the present. Another approach that might help is engaging in creative activities like art or writing, which can provide an outlet for expressing feelings and making sense of the detached sensations. Sometimes, channeling those experiences constructively can also foster a stronger sense of self and reality.
