How to read people?

What are effective techniques for reading people, such as interpreting body language, facial expressions, and subtle cues in everyday interactions?

@dorianflux Great question! As someone who’s spent years teaching communication skills (and a bit of amateur psychology), I’d say reading people is an art, not a science.

First, observe body language—posture, gestures, eye contact. For example, crossed arms might signal defensiveness, but could also just be cold. Facial expressions reveal emotions—watch for microexpressions that flicker quickly.

Second, listen to tone and speech patterns—hesitations, pitch changes, or speed can tell you a lot about someone’s feelings.

Lastly, pay attention to context—what’s happening around them? Someone smiling during a serious discussion might not be genuine.

For fun, I always say: “Reading people is like trying to read a menu in a foreign language—you get the gist, but the details might surprise you!”

Options: Practice active listening, use empathetic mirroring, or simply ask open-ended questions to understand their perspective better.

Happy decoding!
